In chapter 7 pip begins to go to school at mr wopsle great aunts house however its not good education as she sleeps through lessons. While at school Pip met Mr Woplses great Aunts granddaughter called Biddy. One night Pip is practising his writing with Joe however he discovers that Joe is not very well at reading and explains how his father was an alcoholic and used to beat his mother therefore Joe had to to help his father and his drinking problems so he never had time to go to school. Joe says how he like he supports mrs gargery but cant control her temper. When Pip arrives at mr pumblchook mrs gargery has been telling everyone that pip has to serve as Estellas playmate.
